The Washington Capitals have fired their head coach Todd Reirden after two relatively disappointing seasons.

The Capitals exited the 2020 NHL Playoffs after losing in the first round to the New York Islanders on Thursday. Last season the Caps were also ousted from the Playoffs in the first round.

General manager Brian MacLellan made the announcement on Sunday, three days after the team's season ended.

Reirden joined Washington in 2014 as an assistant coach. He was the top assistant to former head coach Barry Trotz before his departure following the team's Stanley Cup victory.

"We have higher expectations for our team, and we felt a fresh approach in leadership was necessary,'' MacLellan tells ESPN. "Todd has been a big part of our team for more than half a decade, including our Stanley Cup run in 2018, and we wish him and his family all the best moving forward.''
