Bethesda Man Who Lit Himself on Fire Near White House Dies from Injuries

The man who set himself on fire on the Ellipse near the White House yesterday (May 29) has died as a result of his injuries.

The US Park Police Service issued a statement this morning that says after the flames were extinguished, the Bethesda man was taken to a local hospital but died due to his injuries. He suffered burns to 85% of his body according to TMZ.

The man has been identified as 33-year-old Arnav Gupta. A Facebook post was published by the Montgomery County Police Department yesterday morning after he had been reported missing that morning and that police were concerned with his "physical and emotional welfare."

A witness said Gupta was wearing a sweatshirt with a message written on it that could not be made out. A suspicious package also on fire was found near where Gupta was extinguished. It's still unclear as to what the package was or contained.
